It formed in 2009 in Columbus, Ohio, by Tyler Joseph university friends, Nick and Chris Thomas Salih. Joseph came up with the name of the band while studying the book All My Sons by Arthur Miller, work on January 1st a father who sold aircraft parts during World War II. At the time of delivering the goods, he learned that his pieces were defective, and he comes to a crossroads moral or to the right not to send pieces, but soiling his name; sold defective or the welfare of your family and your business, knowing that anyway ordered parts, which caused the death of twenty riders, and at the end of the work the man committed suicide. Tyler Joseph explains that the moral dilemma of the story was the inspiration for the name of the band. On 29 December 2009, they released their debut album-independent and began a tour in Ohio.
